Boston Tea Party - Patriots or Terrorists

2 days ago, we had a Socratic seminar on Boston Tea Party. We discussed on a paper based on George Hewes, who told a story about his own experience 60 years ago at the Boston Tea Party. To me, these people involved in the tea party are patriots. They were upset with their government or the British. If the British hadn't taxed the colonists so much, or "taxation without representation," they probably wouldn't even try to fight the British. In the tea party, the patriots are clearly not terrorists. They have not used violence to overthrow the government. They disguised into Indians and threw all the tea into the sea. It was a part of their revolution, sending a message to the British government that they were unhappy, and that there is no right for the parliament to set up taxes whenever, and however they want. This isn't wrong, because the mother country is causing hardships for these colonists, and the colonies in America aren't dependent on the mother country-they can produce their own materials/products. It's the people's responsibility to overthrow the government if the government has dissapointed their citizens. Connecting to a current event, the Boston Tea Party is very similar to the red shirts and yellow shirts event that occurred in Thailand on 2009. The red shirts have their own say, so does the yellow shirts. The British have their own perspective, so does the colonists.

  1. Hi Charlie, thanks for your post. Your position is consistent throughout, even when making connections to current events. So if these events are examples of patriotism, what examples would you use to describe terrorism? Thanks for sharing.
